I’m a mellow person. I very much believe in a “you do you” mentality. I have my ways, my beliefs, and you have yours. It’s all good. If you think “Valentine’s Day” is da bomb, then have at it! But keep your heart-shaped boxes away from me. I detest “Valentine’s Day”, and so I turn to my blog to explain why to you, Minions, as the rest of the world cannot seem to comprehend why I have such a problem with this “holiday”.
1. It starts with a lie.
Way back when, pagan Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia from February 13th to 15th. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain (wooooo! party!). Emperor Claudius II executed two men (both named Valentine) on February 14th (different years, though) in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. And then later on, Pope Gelasius I screwed things up in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to get rid of the pagan rituals. It wasn’t until 1913 that Hallmark Cards began mass producing “valentines” and the month of February started looking like Cupid threw up all over everything. So the truth is, the holiday you know as “Valentine’s Day” was never really a holiday to begin with. The idea of buying things to celebrate romance wasn’t even born until 1913, and it was done in order to boost greeting card sales.
2. It means nothing.
I see people treat one another like absolute crap 364 days of the year, but on February 14th, they’re nice to one another – and that somehow magically means that they are in love. That’s not love, Minions. Love is being nice to one another every day. And when you’re not nice, you should know when to apologize. Show your loved ones respect, give them the gift of communication, and don’t think that you have to slap down $80 for a bouquet of roses to say “I love you”. (which brings me to my next complaint)
3. As the Beatles said, money can’t buy you love.
You don’t have to buy my books for me to love you, Minions. You simply have to be yourselves and I will love you forever. Nor does my husband have to buy me chocolates, nor does my son have to send me flowers. Those things are nice, yes, but they shouldn’t be expected. I see people getting together to compare their “Valentine’s” gifts (always women too – what is up with that?!) and it always leaves me wondering how fulfilling a gift can be if it’s expected. “If he/she/it doesn’t buy me roses on a certain day, it means I am unworthy of affection!” – how silly is that?? You are worthy of affection every day, because you are a good person and deserving of love. Chocolates and flowers aren’t love, Minions. They are things. Like toilet paper and power tools.
4. Something people tend to forget…
It’s okay to be single. There is nothing in the world wrong with being on your own. And I abhor a holiday that makes people feel like they’re some kind of freak because they don’t have a “valentine”. That’s why I fully support Anti-Valentine’s parties! Get together with friends, celebrate how awesome you are. You don’t need a boyfriend or girlfriend to feel like you are special. Because you are amazing every day of the year. So hold a party, invite friends, create some Anti-Valentines with witty sayings about “stupid Cupid”, and remember that friends are more important than having someone to make out with.

I hated it because no girl on this planet loved me or will and now that I know what this “Valentine’s Day” bull-crap is really meant for. to celebrate the great life of a living human whose last name was Valentine. Those are the exact same reasons I hate Valentine’s day! Words like “I love you” are just words until they mean something! And it’s like nobody remembers how horrible Valentine’s day started out as! It’s horrible!

and @bookwormish natasha i agree with you i think everybody will find someone someday and in my opinion of valentines day i just don’t pay attention cuz first, in my country we are in summer vacations when is valentine and i see anybody that i know from my class date anyone so it cause me no pain being the only one that don’t have date , second , nothing special have ever happen to me that day and a question for all the guys that says that no one love you , have you ask someone out ? cuz you can’t know if anybody loves you if you don’t try to make someone fall in love with you maybe you can understand my point cuz no one have ever understand what i’m saying but me anyway maybe girls don’t like you cuz you don’t have nothing of selfesteem and i think that’s what most of girls like but i don’t like it i hate people that have lots of self esteem or love themselves more than anybody i don’t know why … and anybody understand why …. but something i know and i think all the girls like is make them laugh it always work …

hey im new 2 this blog but i hate valintines day. i feel it was hallmarks way of saying 2 anybody that is single ‘Ha! u ppl r losers who dont have lives and still live wwith ur mom (4 ppl who r old enough 2 live n there own)’ i see ppl all around my school giving valintines and hugging. and all i want 2 do is smash every single one of the presents and yell “I HATE THIS DAY I WANT IT TO DIE AND BECOME A NORMAL DAY!!!! THIS WAS THE MOST HORRIBLE SO-CALLED “HOLIDAY” EVER!!!!!!!!!!” but i know thats only because i see girls that i have a crush on getting milions of valintines day presents by guys who have a crush on them or from their boyfriend. IT MAKES ME WANT 2 BARF!!!
but still i dont have a girlfriend (as many of u have probaly already noticed) andthats also part of it. but until i have a girlfriend that passion of my hatred 4 valintines day will burn and get stronger with every passing valintines day.

Yeah I agree with you melissa! Whoever you are. But your right it does bring back the heart break you’ve felt and it makes you feel worse when you see all the happy couples around you.

hey everyone. My boyfriend broke up with me on valentines day so reading this made my past couple of weeks seem not so bad. I also had Vlad and Otis with me because i stayed home and reread the series. It made me realize that my real “vlad-entine” was on my book shelf the whole time ^__^

This type of holiday reminds me of the same thought that hits me about Earth day…
Why just 1 day?!!Why not try to do good everyday for the planet, and why not if u do have someone show that person u care every day?
Its kinda sad, to watch those people go all out and but tons of stuff for 1 day, and I saw a basket that wasnt even filled, it was just simple few candy and flowers and was 40$
I just dont get it… its a day that I just dont even care about, just think of it as (Oh yeah, feb 14… thats the day when I go buy yummy good chocolate:D)
It’s a day that shouldnt be a holiday, and I find it also sad that people need a day alrdy set for them to do something for someone they care about
i thinkk that your opinion should become a world known fact. evry body thinks that one day out of like 365 days you should show love and emotion, but what those people don’t understand is that everbody should do all these things everyday. i go through almost all year without a boyfriend and yet im ok. why can’t everybody else b?
